Fieldprint Platform Model Updates

This page tracks updates and release notes for the models behind Fieldprint Platform indicators: SWAT+, WEPP, WEPS, STEP, and the Habitat Potential Index. Each entry explains what changed, how it may affect your results, and anything you need to do. The newest entries are at the top.

SWAT+ Model Fix: October 9, 2026

Following the September 17, 2026 SWAT+ model update, some users received the error “csip-swatplus/m/swatplus/4.1 returned error: All runs failed” when running analyses on fields with manure applications. This was caused by manure data not being translated correctly for the updated model.

A fix was deployed on October 9, 2026. If a field failed with this error, please re-run the analysis. No changes to your data are needed. If the error continues, contact support with the field name and approximate time of the failed run.

SWAT+ Model Update: September 17, 2026

On September 17, 2026, the SWAT+ model that powers the Soil Carbon indicator in the Fieldprint Platform was updated from version 61.0.2.60 to version 61.0.2.105.

As background, the SWAT+ agro-ecosystem model, developed by the USDA Agricultural Research Service and its research collaborators since the 1990s, is maintained in a repository used by several development groups in the U.S.A and beyond, continuing to enhance and refine the model.  Currently Texas A&M (TAMU) leads a governance team of collaborators managing the content and scope of SWAT+ Main to ensure consistent core use of the model across user communities. In the past five years Colorado State University (CSU) and TAMU have focused on upgrading carbon balance dynamics in SWAT+ for field scale soil carbon assessments.

Field to Market began using SWAT+ for its Soil Carbon Metric in fall 2025 with version 61.0.2.60 and one year later updated to 61.0.2.105.  These versions have kept aligned with overall core SWAT+ Main codebase development, contributing the enhanced field scale carbon balance enhancements.

The changes incorporated in version 61.0.2.105 include several updates. Three relevant items are described below. A complete release-by-release change log is available on request.

  • Below 30cm carbon distribution:  Previously, the shallowest rooting crop limited the rooting depth of subsequent crops. Each crop now roots to its own depth. Although an issue for soil depths below 30cm, it affects dynamics above at least to some extent.  For example, our test cases indicated corn yields increased about 2% and changed how much water moved through the soil. The fix affects cropping sequences with more than one crop.
  • Using soil sample data: The model can now initialize soil carbon using measured soil test results instead of default values. Starting from measured data rather than model defaults produces a more accurate starting point for fields where soil test results are available.
  • Harvest residue: In fields with more than one plant present, such as a cover crop planted before the harvest of the cash crop, the harvest event could miscalculate residue or cause a model error. Harvest events now apply to the right crop. Note that the current Platform release does not support more than one plant growing at the same time.

For most fields, results calculated on version 61.0.2.105 remain reasonably comparable to results calculated on version 61.0.2.60. Projects that require a consistent basis across all years, or that report results externally, may choose to recalculate prior intervals.
